The first step begins before you even leave high school. If you have already left high school, you may have to take some extra courses to catch up on requirements.
The second step is to observe a dental hygienist. Ask your dentist if you can come to the office and observe a hygienist at work one day to find out what the job entails.
Third you want to go on the Internet and get more information about becoming a dental hygienist and start looking around for schools where you can get your degree.  This is a step that can be done before you graduate from high school as well.
Finally, take your required courses and pass both portions of the examination that your state requires. Be aware that you may also have to take a test on the profession’s legal aspects, depending on the state that you live in.
